Eco Factor: Zero-emission prototype motorcycle powered by electricity.

There is much more in the electric motorcycle world than the concepts showcased by Mission Motors and Zero Motorcycles. We’ve seen students try and build green motorcycles with some skill and the addition of electric engines in the past too and here’s something similar again. The motorcycle pictured above has been designed by Greenschool Motorcycles and Akershus University College.

The motorcycle sports a touchscreen dash powered by Ubuntu that offers stats about the bike’s performance and GPS navigation as well. The one-of-a-kind motorcycle is based around a Honda chassis that has its tail chopped and engine replaced with a pack of nickel-metal batteries for a completely silent ride.

We’re not really sure about the bike’s actual performance, but the developers have detailed a few features that include a two-way wireless network with technology from Telenor Objects and a number of sensors that measure battery performance, speed, altitude, temperature and humidity.

Polaris claims that the Linux based system can potentially bring down the set-up and running cost of retail store software by 50 percent.

Polaris Retail Infotech Limited (PRIL) recently launched its Linux powered retail store management solution called iStore Linux. The company has also announced that Samsonite, has chosen the solution and will deploy it across 60 brand outlets in India.

iStore was jointly launched by PRIL and IBM in 2009. The company claims that this product is the first SOA-based retail solution in India that is built on the Java Platform Enterprise Edition.

Commenting on the launch of iStore Linux and the recent wins, Mohit Oberoi, CEO, PRIL, said, “With iStore available on Linux, retailers can significantly bring down the set up and running costs of POS application software by a factor of over 50 percent of the existing costs. This is particularly useful for the large retailers with expanding network of brand outlets as store software will be available at half the cost.”

The iStore POS interface is touch screen enabled. The POS supports multi channel and self service capability. Its back office functionality has a pre-integrated enterprise module with retail ERP functionality and pre-built SAP integration capability. Owing to its SOA architecture, the solution can easily integrate with a retailer’s software and hardware legacy systems.

INSURANCE giant Allianz Australia expects to save more than $1 million by switching from Microsoft Windows to Red Hat Linux for key applications.

The move involves dropping the traditional Wintel (Windows-Intel) platform for a virtualised IBM mainframe running on Linux.

The migration is part of a $4m technology infrastructure overhaul to match Allianz’s growing business requirements.

Further cost savings will come from bringing in house some tasks outsourced to CSC.

“Our data centre was running out of power and we couldn’t add any more servers to the infrastructure,” Allianz Australia infrastructure and operations head Peter Rowe said.

“We started looking at virtualisation as one way of overcoming that problem and elected to revamp the data centre. We were also feeling quite constrained running (IBM) WebSphere applications on the Wintel platform and there was not enough flexibility to grow with Windows.”

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

About 60 servers were replaced with a single mainframe in the virtualised environment.

Allianz has 350-plus servers and Mr Rowe sees more opportunities to reduce the fleet.

“Development servers have been reduced by 40 . . . we can see another 40 to 50 being taken out.”

Allianz’s online applications, such as home and motor insurance quotation programs, now run on IBM-Linux.

“We believe this is just the beginning . . . the move from a Wintel-based environment to a virtualised Linux environment will save over $1m a year in facilities, hardware and software costs,” Mr Rowe said.

A major reason for choosing Red Hat over Novell’s Suse Linux was the former’s tight integration with IBM’s platform, he said.

In addition, Allianz will save more than $500,000 in middleware licensing costs as it moves from WebSphere to JBoss.

Compatibility issues with Microsoft applications such as Word and Excel had prevented the company from moving to a desktop Linux environment, he said.

“It’s difficult to move off when you’re chained to the Microsoft stack. It’s not just a technology shift but a cultural change as well for the whole organisation.”

Meanwhile, CSC, which has a multi-million-dollar contract with Allianz, will continue to manage a large chunk of Allianz’s IT operations except for a few items brought in-house.

CSC would handle mainframe, desktop, internet managed services and data centre facilities, but Unix, network services and file and print would be managed internally, Mr Rowe said. “It has become more cost-effective to run certain elements in-house.”

Allianz had been revising its contract with CSC throughout this year, he said. A switch from Lotus Notes to Microsoft Exchange is also on the cards.

Allianz has 55 staff in IT and operations as part of its 3600-strong employee base.

When it comes to business computer systems, nothing is more mission-critical than the massive trading software systems that underlie stock markets. A failure of an hour here can mean billions of dollars of lost trades. The LSE (London Stock Exchange) learned that the hard way when their .NET/Windows Server 2003 trading platform died like a dog early last September. The new LSE management is not going make that mistake again. This October, the LSE purchased MillenniumIT and will be switching its stock exchange programs to the company’s Linux-based Millennium Exchange software.

The platform itself is built primarily on Linux, but Solaris and Cisco networking also play important roles. The back-end database engine is based on Oracle. The LSE expects to see transaction speeds drop from a claimed best speed of 2.7 milliseconds — which was rarely, if ever, seen under TradElect — to the Linux solution’s claimed 0.4 millisecond speed.

It wasn’t just raw speed though that brought the LSE to Linux. Linux is cheaper, a lot cheaper, for high-end servers.

According to an IBSJ report, David Lester, director of information and technology at LSE, said that compared to the annual bill of $65 million for TradElect, MillenniumIT was a bargain at a purchase price of $30 million. The LSE predicts that moving to Linux will give the company an annual cost savings of at least £10 million ($14.7 million) from 2011-12. In addition, “The new technology is a lot lighter, nimbler and easier to install” and will also enable faster releases.

The LSE hopes to close the deal this month. The transition from TradElect to the MillenniumIT is expected to take up to 18 months. Lester hopes to get it completed faster than that.

In the end, the LSE and its traders will profit from this move. As Steve George, director of corporate services at Canonical (the company behind Ubuntu) told me when we talked about the deal. “When performance and stability matters, as they do in business, Linux is the positive choice. This move will be good both for the LSE and its customers and to the wider family of Linux.”

Quick thinking open sourcerers might have saved an Australian power supply system after its electrical grid control room network got infected with a virus.

A Windows virus hit the networks of Integral Energy and, according to a submission to Slashdot, the virus managed to spread to the operator display consoles in the control room.

Quick thinking techies in the control systems department of the utility swapped the infected Windows boxes for machines running Linux that they were using for development.

The move prevented the virus from taking over all the operator displays in the control room.

360,000 IBM workers have been told to stop using Microsoft Office and switch to the Open Office-based software Symphony.

Quoting an inside source, the German economic newspaper, “Handelsblatt” that staff at IBM have been given ten days to change to Symphony, IBM’s in-house Lotus software. The use of Microsoft Office will in future require managerial approval. With immediate affect, the Open Document Format (ODF) will rule at IBM with the file ending .doc soon belonging to the past.

Lotus Symphony is an office software that incorporates huge chunks of customized Open Office without a databank module. The free software download provided by IBM is an attempt at luring customers away from Microsoft. IBM’s cooperation with Linux distributors like Red Hat, Canonical and Novell was designed to strengthen the software’s market chances.

IBM’s management have obviously decided to practice what they preach. 330,000 IBM workers already use Symphony, reports the newspaper. The motive for the migration appears not to be the saving of license fees, and according to an IBM press officer, the move is a clear statement in appreciation of open source standards.
