What is Linux?
Linux is a computer operating system, based upon UNIX, which is free to own and use. It’s functionality, adaptability and robustness, has made it the main alternative for Microsoft operating systems. IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Dell and other giants of the computing world have embraced Linux and support its ongoing development. It is the most prominent example of open source computing.
What is Open Source?
Open Source is the term given to computer software which can be freely viewed and changed. Because the code can be viewed by programmers all over the world, problems are fixed quickly and features can be added more easily.
Why would my business want it?
Your business can benefit from open source instead of, or alongside, your current proprietary software because it is easily adapted to suit your requirements, confirms to standards, works well with other software and the licence costs are much less. It makes sense. You can profit from the lower costs and improved performance of Linux.

Customer Testimonials
A very successful local company selling wooden toys needed a server solution which was both reliable and secure.
“In the past 3 years, the Linux operating system has provided us with secure, reliable and flexible computer servers for our business. There has never been a breach of the internet firewall (which averages 17 attacks a day), and we can safely copy our data off-site. There have been no server ‘crashes’ due to software fault, and there has been no loss of data (which runs into the 100’s of Gigabytes nowadays). We are automatically covered if one of the hard drives should fail, or if power should be lost to the building. It has also been easy to add extra features to our servers. We have just added a database which can be edited and used by everyone in the office. I particularly like the ability to be able to log in to the servers and check my email when travelling around the world on business. We have just invested in more office space for our business and we will be moving one of the servers with us. According to our IT department this is going to be ‘easy and no problem’… which really sums up what Linux is all about.”
